Relays have been used extensively in automobiles for many years. The main usage of relays in an automotive application is to control a high amperage component, such as a fuel pump or electric fans, with a low amperage circuit or switch, such as a fuel pump grounding circuit on an ECM.

There are several benefits of using relays in an automotive application. First, as stated earlier, you can turn on a high current component, such as an electric cooling fan that draws 70 amps of DC current, with a switch that has a much lower amperage rating or even an ECM with a circuit that simply provides a ground to turn the fan on and off. Another benefit of using a relay in your project is that the high amperage component is connected directly to the battery using a larger gauge wire, allowing the high amperage component to operate at full capacity.

A good example of this benefit can be seen when using a relay in a halogen headlight circuit. A halogen headlight operated with a relay will be considerably brighter than one that has to rely on its power passing thru a headlight switch and the 14ga. headlight wires that are used in most chassis harnesses. The final benefit of using a relay that we will discuss is circuit isolation. If you use an ECM to control a relay the relay isolates the ECM from any voltage spikes or feedback issues created by the high amperage component, helping to protect the sensitive semiconductors found inside the ECM.

Manifold Heater Relay
The job of the manifold heater is to help vaporize fuel in the intake manifold when the engine is cold. This will help with cold starts and idling until the engine is up to operating temperature.
