Safety first! In our 24+ years of 2JZ expertise, the number one thing we see happen in a head is for the shim to come out of the OEM bucket at high RPM. This causes the metal shim to get thrown into the motor, and if you don’t shut it down immediately, circulate metal through your oil. We have seen a $30,000 stroker motor completely ruined because of one head shim. Don’t let this happen to you! Shimless buckets are the only way to guarantee you’ll never be the victim of this expensive lesson.

Weight savings! When going all-in on a 2JZ cylinder head, weight savings is very helpful. Shimless buckets are exactly what they sound like – buckets that are designed in various sizes which eliminate the shim and bucket used on the factory cylinder head. The weight savings is almost 50%, so that certainly helps when you get to 8,000+ RPM’s. If you have not machined and done initial assembly on your head then you can save a lot of hassle and purchase shimless buckets that are all the same dimensions. In order to do this, which we recommend for every cylinder head, make sure whoever is building your head has a ‘set valve height tip length’. If you take care of that, then since the tip lengths are all the same the buckets can all be the same.
